LEARN MORE ABOUT FINAN MCDONALD

Finan McDonald Clothing Company opened it’s doors in downtown Sandpoint, Idaho, in 1987.  Starting out as a different kind of men’s store, it specialized in natural fiber clothing with an outdoorsy look and feel. It was a hit almost immediately and women started asking for a similar look for themselves. Soon thereafter, Finan also began carrying women’s apparel. The store has outgrown several locations and is now in a new space three times larger than the original. A tourist’s and local’s favorite for almost 30 years. Finan McDonald carries both men’s, women’s, and children’s apparel, footwear, accessories, and travel gear!

THE NAME

A 6′ 5″ wild redheaded Scotsman, Finan McDonald must have been an imposing figure around here back in 1807; when the average height of a man was just over 5′! He was one of the first Europeans to explore this area with the famous surveyor and explorer, David Thompson, and set up and ran many trading posts throughout the Inland Northwest and British Columbia. In many respects, Finan was North Idaho’s first retailer! His great sounding name carries on today with Finan McDonald Clothing Company.

The Sandpoint store and owners Ben and Rhonda Tate were honored as the May business of the month by the Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce.

Most of their employees have worked there for years and are considered family, the Tates said. Sandy Hughes-Rose has worked at Finan McDonald for 22 years, office manager Susan Haynes has been there 16 years, Kim Walby has been there for over 14 years, Brittany Smith for nearly 10 years, and Leslie Wahlin for 5 years. They have recently welcomed Kay Reifsnyder and Charann Briot to their staff and feel very lucky to have each one as a part of the Finan McDonald family.

The Tates have been long-time supporters of the community and local non-profit organizations. Rhonda Tate is an 11-year volunteer CASA Advocate — Court Appointed Special Advocate — helping numerous children and their families as they navigate the court systems and giving these children a voice in court.
